CollaborationThin moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco's collaboration line is still about 11% smaller than in fiscal 2020, facing Zoom and Microsoft for the same users.

Collaboration is Cisco's third product line and its only one that is smaller than in fiscal 2020. It sold $4,300 million in fiscal 2026, up 4%1, about 6.8% of revenue2. In the fourth quarter it sold $1,167 million, up 12%3.

Below its fiscal 2020 level.

What is inside is "our Webex Suite, Collaboration Devices, Contact Center and CPaaS offerings"4: video meetings and calling software, the cameras and screens in meeting rooms, call-centre software, and programmable communications services for developers.

The history is a pandemic peak and a long retreat. On Cisco's older categories Collaboration sold $4,823 million in fiscal 20205 and $4,727 million in fiscal 20216. It then fell to $4,472 million in fiscal 2022 and $4,052 million in fiscal 20237, before recovering to $4,113 million, $4,154 million and $4,300 million8. Fiscal 2026 is still about 11% below fiscal 20209.

How it is paid: a mix of software subscriptions and devices sold outright.

Profitability is not disclosed by line. Its 10-K names Zoom, RingCentral and Microsoft as competitors10, companies that sell meetings and calling to the same employees.

Growth has returned, modestly. The line grew 3.5% for the year11 and 12% in the fourth quarter12, helped by devices for meeting rooms.

The line was growing before the pandemic. On the oldest disclosure collaboration sold $3,817 million in fiscal 2014 and $4,352 million in fiscal 201613, so today's $4,300 million is roughly where it stood a decade ago14. A decade without growth, in a category that became central to office work, is the plainest evidence that Cisco does not hold a moat here.

The outlook is for a small, stable business rather than a growth engine. The verdict would change if collaboration grew above 5% for a second year, which would show Webex holding its place; a return to decline would confirm it as the part of Cisco the competition has already passed by.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady
