Observability: $1.1 Billion After Two AcquisitionsThin moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco has combined Splunk and AppDynamics into a $1.1 billion observability line whose application-monitoring suite is shrinking.
Observability, software that watches applications and networks for faults, is Cisco's smallest product line and the one it assembled almost entirely by acquisition. It sold $1,095 million in fiscal 2026, up 4%1, about 1.7% of revenue2. Cisco describes the offering as "Splunk combined with AppDynamics"3, two acquired businesses.
It has grown faster in the past. The line was $581 million in fiscal 2022, $661 million in fiscal 2023, $837 million in fiscal 2024 and $1,055 million in fiscal 202545: growth of about 14%, 27% and 26% before the 4% of fiscal 20266.
The category also includes network assurance, and Cisco said fiscal 2026 growth was "partially offset by a decline in our observability suite offerings"7. In plain terms, the network-monitoring part grew while the application-monitoring suite shrank.
The competitors are specialists. Cisco names Datadog and Dynatrace8, and in the fourth quarter it bought Galileo Technologies, a privately held observability company9.
The line's growth in fiscal 2024 and 2025 came from the acquisition, not from organic demand. Cisco's revenue in fiscal 2024 was $53,803 million as reported and would have been $56,761 million had Splunk been owned all year10. Once the acquired revenue was in the base, the growth rate fell to 4%.
Observability is too small to move Cisco's results, but it tests whether Cisco can sell software on its own merits. The fourth quarter was $275 million, up 6%11; another year of the suite shrinking would mean the application side of Splunk is losing to the specialists.
Growth fell from 26% to 4%; suite offerings declined.
The acquired software on its own merits; another year of suite decline would mean the specialists are winning.
