Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Cisco is spending the same $6 billion a year on buybacks at prices 62% higher than two years ago.

Cisco's buybacks are getting more expensive, which makes them less useful. It bought 117 million shares at an average $49.45 in fiscal 2024, 105 million at $56.53 in fiscal 2025 and 76 million at $80.26 in fiscal 20261. In the fourth quarter it paid $111.53 a share2.

The price of each share retired keeps rising.

The dollar amount barely changed, about $6 billion a year3, but it retired 41 million fewer shares in fiscal 2026 than two years before4. The average price rose about 62%5.

A buyback adds value when the price is below what the business is worth. At about 32 times trailing earnings6, the price is high by Cisco's own history: it ended fiscal 2026 at 33.9 times earnings, the highest of its last five fiscal year ends7.

The history shows when buybacks were cheaper. In fiscal 2018 Cisco bought 432 million shares at an average $40.88, spending $17,661 million8. The same money at fiscal 2026's average price would have retired about 220 million shares9.

What would show discipline is a slower buyback at higher prices, with the cash held or used to reduce debt. Continued buying near $110 would mean the programme runs on habit rather than value.
