The Americas Margin Paid for the GrowthNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
The Americas margin fell 3.1 points in one year as Cisco sold AI systems to hyperscalers, while Europe's held at 71%.
Cisco's segment reports show who paid for the AI business: the Americas margin. Cisco reports three geographic segments and measures them by revenue and gross margin1. The Americas segment gross margin fell from 68.2% in fiscal 2025 to 65.1% in fiscal 20262, while EMEA held at 71.2%3.
The Americas is where the hyperscalers are. Its revenue grew about 12.3% to $37,799 million45, and its product revenue rose 17%6. The margin drop of 310 basis points7 is the price of selling large systems to buyers who negotiate hard.
The history shows the margin had been climbing. Americas gross margin was 64.1% in fiscal 2022, 63.8% in fiscal 2023 and 66.8% in fiscal 20248, then 68.2% in fiscal 20259. Fiscal 2026 gave back most of the gain.
The segment still earns healthy margins, and it produces most of Cisco's gross profit, $24,625 million10.
Across the whole company the segment margin tells the same story. Total segment gross margin was 64.6% in fiscal 2022 and 64.5% in fiscal 202311, rose to 67.5% in fiscal 2024 and 68.7% in fiscal 2025, and fell to 66.9% in fiscal 202612. The Americas carried most of that fall.
Services cannot explain it. Americas services revenue fell 1% in fiscal 2026 while Americas product revenue rose 17% to $28,900 million13. The margin fell because the product mix changed within the segment, toward the large systems the hyperscalers buy.
An Americas gross margin below 64% as AI revenue rises to a tenth of the company would mean the growth is coming at the expense of the enterprise margin that built the moat.
Americas gross margin 68.2% to 65.1%.
The margin cost of hyperscaler growth; a fall below 64% would mean growth is eroding the enterprise margin.
