⚠ An AI Cycle Priced as a TrendHigh threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's price-to-earnings ratio doubled from about 17 to 32 on a year of networking growth that follows two years of networking decline.
Cisco's shares have been re-priced for a growth company on the evidence of one strong hardware year. At $106.97 on 24 September 2026, a market value of $421.74 billion, the trailing price-to-earnings ratio was 32.121; the forward ratio on adjusted earnings was 20.782. At the end of fiscal 2023 the ratio was 16.83, and at the end of fiscal 2024 18.693.
The earnings behind the higher multiple come mostly from networking. Networking supplied about 95% of fiscal 2026's revenue increase4, and it is a business that fell about 15% in fiscal 20245. The recurring half grew little: subscription revenue about 1.4%6 and services not at all7.
The market has already begun to hesitate. The shares are about 18% below their 52-week high of $130.3789, and a broker cut its price target to $125 from $132 in September10. The consensus still expects fiscal 2027 revenue of $73.16 billion11.
A cyclical business valued at a trend multiple loses twice when the cycle turns: earnings fall and the multiple falls with them.
The market value has moved far more than the business. At calendar year ends Cisco was worth $205.29 billion in 2023, $235.78 billion in 2024 and $304.35 billion in 202512, and $421.74 billion in September 202613. Over those three years revenue rose about 11% from fiscal 2023 to fiscal 202614, while the market value roughly doubled. Analysts' average price target of $137.2515 assumes more of the same.
Other measures agree the shares are priced for growth. The enterprise value was $437.01 billion, 23.44 times EBITDA, and the price was 8.39 times book value16. Institutions held 82.31% of the shares17, so the holders who will decide when the multiple changes are professional investors with their own view of the cycle.
The threat becomes real if networking growth slows sharply in fiscal 2027. Watch quarterly networking revenue against the $9,791 million of the fourth quarter of fiscal 202618; two quarters below that level would mean the cycle has turned under a trend valuation.
The valuation the cycle must support; a networking slowdown at this multiple would hit earnings and multiple together.
