✦ A 35% Operating MarginNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — the future bets
Cisco is guiding to a record non-GAAP operating margin of about 35% while its gross margin falls, which only works if costs keep falling faster.
Cisco is betting that its margins can stay near their best. Non-GAAP operating margin was 34.4% in fiscal 2025 and 34.8% in fiscal 20261, and 35.9% in the fourth quarter2. First-quarter fiscal 2027 guidance is 35.5% to 36.5%3.
The finance chief described an operating margin of about 35% for fiscal 2027 as "a high watermark"4. That phrase is candid: it says the margin has little further to rise.
The levers are cost and scale. Cisco has cut its workforce from about 90,400 in fiscal 2024 to about 82,40056, and is restructuring again, with charges of up to $1 billion to invest in "silicon, optics, security and AI"7.
The drag is mix. Hyperscaler hardware carries lower gross margins, and the non-GAAP gross margin guided for the first quarter, 65% to 66%, is below the 66.3% of the fourth quarter8. Holding operating margin while gross margin falls means cutting operating costs faster than revenue grows.
GAAP margins are lower and more volatile. GAAP operating income was 24.3% of revenue in fiscal 2026 and 20.8% in fiscal 20259; the gap to the non-GAAP margin includes acquisition amortisation and restructuring charges. The first quarter of fiscal 2027 is guided to GAAP earnings of $1.08 to $1.10 a share against non-GAAP $1.32 to $1.3410.
This bet is the most fragile of the four because it depends on the others. The fiscal 2027 non-GAAP operating margin is the figure to follow; below 34% would show mix winning over cost control.
Q1 FY2027 guided 35.5-36.5%.
Whether cost cuts outrun mix; below 34% for fiscal 2027 would show mix winning.
