Security: $8.2 Billion and Up 2%Thin moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco's security revenue grew 72% in five years on its own, then doubled with Splunk, then grew 2%.

Security is Cisco's second-largest product line, and in fiscal 2026 it stopped growing. Revenue was $8,232 million against $8,094 million, up 2%1.

Security revenue, older product basis ($M)1,969FY162,152FY172,388FY182,822FY193,158FY203,382FY21Cisco Forms 10-K FY2018-FY2021; latest restatement per year
The organic record before Splunk.

Before Splunk it grew steadily on its own. On Cisco's older product basis, Security revenue rose from $1,969 million in fiscal 20162 to $3,382 million in fiscal 20213, about 72% in five years4. On the current basis it was $3,699 million in fiscal 2022 and $3,859 million in fiscal 20235. Splunk more than doubled it, to $8,094 million in fiscal 202567.

The category now covers network security, identity and access management, secure access service edge, and "Identity and Agentic Security"8. Cisco's fiscal 2025 description included threat detection offerings from Splunk; the fiscal 2026 description no longer lists that sub-line separately9.

The competition is crowded. Its 10-K names Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, CrowdStrike and Zscaler10, specialists that sell security as their whole business.

Splunk's arrival changed how the line is described. In fiscal 2025 Cisco said Security grew 59%, "or $3.0 billion"11, a figure almost entirely acquired. The fiscal 2026 description instead lists Identity and Agentic Security12, the newer products Cisco is building itself.

The line is now the second-largest source of Cisco's product revenue and about 13% of the company13. At that size it can move Cisco's growth rate only if it grows well above the company average, which it has not done without an acquisition since fiscal 2023.

The fourth quarter looked better, up 14%14, but the next page explains why. Security growth in fiscal 2027 is the test: the finance chief guided the first quarter to mid-to-high single digits15, and anything below that would confirm Cisco's security business grows only when it buys.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

FY2026 +2%; Q4 +14% on long-duration deals.
