Returning 99% of Free Cash FlowNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Cisco returned 99% of its free cash flow in fiscal 2026, which says the business needs almost no reinvestment and leaves nothing spare.
Cisco gives its owners almost everything it earns in cash. In fiscal 2026 it returned $12,659 million: $6,553 million in dividends and $6,106 million in buybacks1. Free cash flow was $12,767 million2, so the payout was about 99%3, the figure management also cited4.
It has done so for years. Buybacks were $5,764 million in fiscal 2024 and $5,995 million in fiscal 20255, and much larger before: $17,661 million in fiscal 2018 and $20,577 million in fiscal 20196, after cash held abroad was brought home following the Tax Act.
A business that can pay out all its free cash flow and still grow has a moat that does not need reinvestment. Cisco's capital spending was $1,410 million in fiscal 20267, about 2% of revenue8.
The limit is that the payout leaves nothing for surprises. The Splunk purchase was paid for with debt, and the next large acquisition would be too.
The buybacks are also shrinking in shares. In the fourth quarter Cisco bought 13 million shares at an average $111.53, spending $1,502 million, alongside $1,659 million of dividends9. The authorisation remaining was $8.1 billion10, a little over a year at the fiscal 2026 pace of $6.1 billion11.
In a weak year the payout exceeds the cash. In fiscal 2024 Cisco paid $6,384 million of dividends and $5,764 million of buybacks against free cash flow of $10,210 million12, about 119%13. The difference came from the balance sheet, the same year Splunk was bought with borrowed money.
Free cash flow is where this ends. It fell from $13,288 million to $12,767 million in fiscal 202614; if it falls again while payouts hold, Cisco will be paying out more than it earns.
Payout about 99% of free cash flow.
The payout against cash generation; returns above free cash flow for long would mean the balance sheet is funding them.
