⚠ A $6.6 Billion CommitmentLow threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's dividend takes about half of its free cash flow, and took nearly two-thirds in the weak year of fiscal 2024.
The dividend has become a large fixed claim on Cisco's cash. It cost $6,384 million in fiscal 2024, $6,437 million in fiscal 2025 and $6,553 million in fiscal 20261. Against free cash flow of $10,210 million, $13,288 million and $12,767 million2, that is about 62.5%, 48.4% and 51.3%3.
The fiscal 2024 figure shows what a weak year does. When free cash flow fell to $10,210 million, the dividend took nearly two-thirds of it, leaving little for buybacks without borrowing.
Cisco's cash generation is steady enough to carry this in most years. Operating cash flow was between about $13.6 billion and $15.8 billion in every year from fiscal 2016 to 20204, and about $14.2 billion in each of the last two5.
Cash on hand would cover nearly two and a half years of dividends6. Cash and investments were $15.9 billion at the end of fiscal 20267 against dividends of $6,553 million8. But that cash is already smaller than Cisco's debt, so it is not a spare reserve.
The warning is a year in which free cash flow falls below $10 billion. Then the dividend would take two-thirds or more, and Cisco would have to choose between the dividend record and the buyback.
