Half the Company Is SubscriptionNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Half of Cisco's revenue is now subscription, but the subscription half grew 1% in fiscal 2026 while the hardware half grew 16%.
Cisco has spent a decade converting itself from a box seller into a subscription business, and it has half succeeded. Subscription revenue was $31,977 million in fiscal 20261, about 50.5% of revenue2. Products sold on subscription accounted for $18,314 million and services on subscription $13,663 million3.
The conversion has stalled. Subscription revenue was $27,380 million in fiscal 2024 and $31,526 million in fiscal 20254, a rise that came largely from Splunk. In fiscal 2026 it grew about 1.4%5, and Cisco's annual recurring revenue, as described on the call, was $32.1 billion, up 3%6.
Total software revenue was $23.2 billion, up 4%, while "total subscription revenue increased 1%"7.
The point of subscriptions is predictability, and here they deliver: half of Cisco's revenue is billed on recurring terms and renews. The problem is that the recurring half is not growing while the hardware half is.
The subscription figure includes much that looks like hardware. Product subscription revenue was $18,314 million in fiscal 2026 against $17,783 million a year earlier8, up about 3.0%9, while product revenue as a whole rose about 16%10. The hardware Cisco sold outright grew far faster than the products it sold on subscription.
Services subscription revenue has barely moved in two years: $13,302 million in fiscal 2024, $13,743 million in fiscal 2025 and $13,663 million in fiscal 202611. All the subscription growth since fiscal 2024 has come from products, most of it from Splunk.
The number that matters is the growth of annual recurring revenue, 3% in the fourth quarter12. A return above 6% would show the software strategy working without acquisitions; another year near 3% would mean Cisco's growth depends on hardware cycles after all.
Subscription +1%, ARR +3%.
Whether the recurring half keeps pace; a further fall would mean growth depends on hardware cycles.
