⚠ Large and Sporadic PurchasesModerate threat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat
Cisco's networking growth accelerated every quarter of fiscal 2026 because a few large buyers bought in lumps, which is also how it will slow.
The customers who buy routers in the largest orders also buy the least predictably. Cisco's filing says sales to the service provider and cloud market "are often characterized by large and sporadic purchases"1.
Fiscal 2026 showed the pattern in the upward direction. Networking revenue grew 15% in the first quarter2, 21% in the second3, 25% in the third4 and 28% in the fourth5. Each quarter was carried partly by large orders from a handful of cloud and AI buyers.
The same lumpiness works downward. Networking revenue fell from $34,570 million in fiscal 2023 to $29,229 million in fiscal 20246, a drop of about 15%7.
The same pattern appears in the orders. After the third quarter Cisco raised its expected fiscal 2026 hyperscaler AI orders to $9 billion from $5 billion8, an increase of 80% in its own forecast within a single quarter9. Forecasts that move that much in three months are a sign of lumpy demand, whichever way they move.
The warning would be a quarter in which networking growth halves without a change in guidance. That is how a lump ends.
