Cisco Systems (CSCO) — threat to the moat

Cisco's record networking year of fiscal 2026 was only 0.3% above fiscal 2023, after two years of decline.

Fiscal 2026 looked like a breakout, but for Cisco's core business it was a recovery. Networking revenue was $34,668 million1, only 0.3% above the $34,570 million of fiscal 202323.

Networking revenue change by year ($M)+5,305FY23-5,341FY24-925FY25+6,364FY26Cisco Forms 10-K FY2024 and FY2026; changes calculated
Down five billion, then up six.

In between it fell twice. Networking dropped about 15% to $29,229 million in fiscal 2024 and another 3.2% to $28,304 million in fiscal 202545. Then it rose $6,364 million in a single year6.

A business that falls by $5.3 billion in one year and rises by $6.4 billion three years later is a cyclical one7. The installed base keeps customers loyal, but it does not make them buy on a schedule.

Longer histories show the same shape. On the older Infrastructure Platforms basis, the core hardware sold $30,184 million in fiscal 2019, then $27,219 million in fiscal 2020 and $27,109 million in fiscal 20218. Two declines in three years has been the rhythm of this business for most of a decade.

The dependence is now greater than before. Networking was about 72% of product revenue in fiscal 20269, so a networking decline of the fiscal 2024 kind would pull the whole product business down with it, and the flat software and services lines would not offset it.

What would show the moat outlasting the cycle is fiscal 2027 networking holding above $34.7 billion even without the AI orders. If networking excluding cloud buyers falls again, the record will have been the top of a cycle, not a new level.
