NetworkingNarrow moat
Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet
Networking is 55% of Cisco and supplied 95% of its growth in fiscal 2026, yet it is only 0.3% above where it stood in fiscal 2023.
Networking is Cisco's original business and still more than half of it. The category sold $34,668 million in fiscal 20261, about 54.7% of revenue and 72% of product revenue2. In the fourth quarter it sold $9,791 million, up 28%3.
What is inside, in Cisco's words, is "our core networking technologies of switching, routing, wireless, and servers"4. The category also includes Acacia optics5. The largest customers are enterprises, governments and telecom operators refreshing campus and branch networks, and since fiscal 2025 the cloud providers buying Silicon One systems for AI data centres.
The history is cyclical. On Cisco's older product basis, Infrastructure Platforms sold $28,851 million in fiscal 20166, $30,184 million in fiscal 2019 and $27,109 million in fiscal 20217: a decade without growth. On the current basis Networking was $29,265 million in fiscal 2022, $34,570 million in fiscal 20238, then $29,229 million in fiscal 2024 and $28,304 million in fiscal 2025 before $34,668 million in fiscal 20269. Fiscal 2026 is only 0.3% above fiscal 202310.
How it is paid: mostly as hardware sold outright, through channel partners, with software licences and support contracts attached. That attachment is what feeds the services and subscription lines.
Profitability is not disclosed by line. Cisco's product gross margin was 63.2% in fiscal 2026, and the 3.6-point negative mix effect was "primarily due to higher Networking revenue"11, which says networking, and especially hyperscaler networking, earns below the product average.
Growth accelerated through the year: 15%, 21%, 25% and 28% by quarter12131415. Price increases contributed about 5 points of fourth-quarter growth16, and networking orders rose 40%17.
The quarter-by-quarter figures show the scale of the upswing. Networking sold $7,768 million in the first quarter, $8,294 million in the second, $8,815 million in the third and $9,791 million in the fourth18192021. On the oldest disclosure, from fiscal 2016, switching alone sold $14,746 million and routing $7,408 million22; those two products are still the core of the line a decade later.
The line also depends on supply. Cisco's inventory purchase commitments more than doubled to $17,165 million23, most of them for networking hardware. That is the capital cost of a networking boom: the parts must be bought before the orders turn into revenue.
The outlook is strong for fiscal 2027, with $7.5 billion of AI infrastructure revenue expected24. The question is what lies after. The verdict would change if networking excluding AI revenue fell again in fiscal 2027, as it did in fiscal 2024; that would mean the installed base buys in cycles and fiscal 2026 was the top of one.
Growth accelerated to +28% in Q4 FY2026; AI orders $9.3bn.
The engine of fiscal 2026; two quarters below this level would mean the cycle turned.
