A Dividend Raised for Fifteen YearsNarrow moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco has raised its dividend fifteen years running, from 72 cents to $1.66, but now by a cent at a time.

Cisco's dividend is one of the steadiest things about it. Dividends declared per share were $0.72 in fiscal 20141, $1.24 in fiscal 20182, $1.50 in fiscal 20223 and $1.66 in fiscal 20264, a rise of about 2.3 times5. On the fourth-quarter call Cisco described the latest increase as its 15th consecutive year6.

Fast in the 2010s, slow now.

The increases have become small. The quarterly dividend was raised by one cent to $0.42 in February 2026, "up 2%"7, and the next payment of $0.42 is due on 21 October 20268.

The dividend costs about half of free cash flow: $6,553 million in fiscal 2026 against $12,767 million9, about 51%10. The payout ratio against earnings was about 50%11.

A rising dividend paid from half of free cash flow is a sign of a business that trusts its future cash. It is also a commitment that limits flexibility, because Cisco has not cut it and investors would treat a cut as a verdict.

Cisco pays out about half of its reported earnings. The payout ratio was 50.45% and the annual dividend $1.681213. For a company growing earnings in single digits over a cycle, that leaves room for raises without cutting buybacks, as long as free cash flow holds.

The count itself varies by source. The call highlights describe the increase as the 15th consecutive year14, while one market data provider lists 14 years of dividend growth15; the filings do not count.

At a 1.57% yield16, the dividend no longer defines the shares' appeal. Another one-cent rise at the next annual increase would say management sees little room above the buyback.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Raised to $0.42 a quarter in February 2026, up 2%.

$0.42 (raised February 2026, +2%)

Management's confidence in cash; increases of a cent or less would say little room remains beside the buyback.
