A 24.3% Operating Margin With 8,000 Fewer PeopleNarrow moat

Cisco Systems (CSCO) — moat facet

Cisco lifted its operating margin from 20.8% to 24.3% in a year with 8,000 fewer employees than two years ago.

Cisco's operating margin rose sharply in fiscal 2026 while its workforce shrank. GAAP operating income was $15,368 million, 24.3% of revenue, against 20.8% in fiscal 20251. Employees fell to about 82,400 from about 90,400 two years earlier23, about 8.8% fewer4.

8,000 fewer people than two years ago.

Management called it "highest productivity metrics in 30 years" by revenue, non-GAAP operating margin and earnings per employee5. Non-GAAP operating margin was 34.8% against 34.4%6.

Part of the improvement is cost control. General and administrative expense fell to $2,761 million from $2,992 million7. Part is the absence of prior-year charges: fiscal 2025 carried the supplier settlement.

Part is scale. Revenue rose $6.7 billion while research and development rose only $263 million and sales and marketing $593 million89.

The sales force shrank with the rest. Cisco had about 28,000 people in worldwide sales and marketing in fiscal 2024 and about 25,400 in fiscal 20261011, while revenue rose about 17.7% over the two years12. Revenue per salesperson rose accordingly, helped by large hyperscaler orders that need few sellers.

Overhead fell in absolute terms. General and administrative expense was $2,813 million in fiscal 2024, $2,992 million in fiscal 2025 and $2,761 million in fiscal 202613, a fall of about 7.7% in the last year14 while revenue rose about 11.8%15.

Much of the gain depends on the hardware cycle continuing. If the GAAP operating margin falls back toward 21% when hardware growth slows, the productivity gains were the cycle, not the company.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

GAAP margin 24.3%; management calls 35% non-GAAP a high watermark.

Operating leverage; a fall back toward 21% when hardware slows would show the gains were cyclical.
