◆ What the Market Isn't Pricing In
Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — the variant view
The market pays about 75 times Palo Alto's free cash flow, and more than two-fifths of that cash flow is stock pay added back.
📈 PANW valuation, revenue & earnings — P/E, P/S, revenue, EPS →The market values Palo Alto on its cash flow, and that cash flow counts stock pay as free. Free cash flow was $4,113 million in fiscal 20261, and at a market value of $306.54 billion2 the shares trade at about 74.5 times it3. But share-based compensation added back in the cash flow statement was $1,774 million4, about 43% of free cash flow5.
Deduct it and the picture changes. Free cash flow after stock pay was about $2,339 million, about 20.4% of revenue6, which on today's market value is a yield of about 0.76%7. The company pays no dividend8 and has never paid one.
The stock pay is not just an accounting charge. Shares outstanding rose about 7.76% in a year9, partly from CyberArk, and the company still had $3.3 billion of unrecognised stock compensation to expense over about 2.5 years10.
The market also appears to be looking through the GAAP results. Operating margin was 6.1% on GAAP and about 29.2% on the company's non-GAAP basis11. The difference includes the cost of the acquisitions and the stock pay, both of which shareholders bear.
The chief executive's own purchase is a useful signal. Nikesh Arora bought about $10 million of shares in March 2026, his first purchase since November 201912, near the low of the year. Insiders own 0.71%13.
The stock pay has grown faster than revenue. Total share-based compensation in the 10-K was $1,079 million in fiscal 2024, $1,300 million in fiscal 2025 and $1,815 million in fiscal 202614, up about 68% in two years15, while revenue rose about 43%16. Part of the fiscal 2026 increase, $177 million, was accelerated vesting on CyberArk and Koi awards17.
The company's tax charge adds to the gap between reported and adjusted profit. Fiscal 2026 tax was $229 million on pre-tax income of about $536 million1819, an effective rate of about 42.7%20, so every dollar of pre-tax profit kept only about 57 cents.
The reconciling number is free cash flow after stock pay. If it grows faster than reported free cash flow in fiscal 2027, the stock cost is falling and the market's reading is right; if it stays near $2.3 billion while reported free cash flow rises, the growth is being paid for in shares.
