Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Support revenue, the maintenance on Palo Alto's installed base, slowed to about 9% growth before CyberArk's contracts lifted it.

Support is the fee Palo Alto charges to keep its installed products current and supported: $2,961 million in fiscal 2026, about 25.8% of revenue12, up about 21.1%3.

A steady climb, lifted again by CyberArk.

What is inside is technical support, software updates and hardware replacement for products customers already own, and since February 2026 the support contracts on CyberArk's on-premise identity software. It is the most direct measure of the installed base: a customer pays support only while it keeps using the product.

The history tracks the firewall base. Support revenue was $222.7 million in fiscal 20154, passed $1 billion in fiscal 2021 at $1,237.0 million5 and reached $2,445.2 million in fiscal 20256. It compounded at about 26.5% a year over eleven years7. Its share of revenue has barely changed, 24.0% in fiscal 2015 and 25.8% in fiscal 20268, because it grows with the product line it services and the subscriptions sold alongside.

Support is paid in advance, usually annually or for several years, and renews almost automatically as long as the equipment is in use.

Growth had slowed sharply before CyberArk. Support grew about 29.3% in fiscal 2022, about 13.0% in fiscal 2024 and about 9.4% in fiscal 20259, as the firewall base matured and platform deals shifted spending toward subscriptions. The CyberArk support contracts lifted it to about 21.1% in fiscal 2026.

Support held up through the platform reset. In fiscal 2024, the year Palo Alto gave products away to win platform deals, support grew about 13.0% while product revenue grew only about 1.6%10. The installed base kept paying while new hardware sales stalled.

Palo Alto does not disclose support's profitability separately. Support revenue is the plainest measure of whether customers are keeping Palo Alto equipment; growth in fiscal 2027 below the roughly 9% of fiscal 2025 would mean the installed base is shrinking in real terms beneath the acquisitions.
