⚠ The Nine-Figure QuarterModerate threat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — threat to the moat

Palo Alto's record quarter of new software ARR included a nine-figure boost from one AI customer switching vendors.

Palo Alto's strongest quarter included a one-off. The company said it added "nearly $1 billion of Net New NGS ARR in a single quarter" in the fourth quarter of fiscal 20261. On the call it added that the figure "includes a 9 figure benefit from a large LLM customer migrating to Chronosphere from an incumbent vendor"2.

The next quarter is guided at less than half.

Management warned that the first quarter of fiscal 2027 contribution "will be less than what was added in Q4"3. Its guidance for NGS ARR at the end of that quarter is $9.54 billion to $9.56 billion4, implying net new ARR of roughly $440 million to $460 million5, less than half the fourth-quarter figure.

A single large customer moving to an observability product that is billed on usage is also a reminder of the company's own warning about "revenue volatility from consumption- or usage-based offerings"6.

The fourth quarter also beat the company's own targets set three months earlier. After the third quarter Palo Alto guided year-end NGS ARR to $8.90 billion to $8.95 billion and RPO to $20.9 billion to $21.0 billion7. It reported $9.10 billion and $21.2 billion8. Some of that beat was the single customer migration; the filings do not say how much.

None of this undoes the quarter. What would matter is a first-quarter NGS ARR figure below $9.54 billion, which would mean the underlying pace, without the one-off, is slower than the company itself expects.
