Built on the Next-Generation FirewallNarrow moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto's firewall has shrunk from half its revenue to a fifth, but it remains the door through which customers enter.

Everything Palo Alto sells today is sold into a base built by one product. Nir Zuk founded the company in 2005, "pioneering the next-generation firewall"1, a firewall that recognised applications rather than just network ports. The company was incorporated in March 20052 and listed in July 2012, when it was worth $3.54 billion3.

Sixfold growth, a shrinking share.

The product line has grown more than sixfold since. Product revenue, which began as firewall appliances, was $340.1 million in fiscal 20144 and $2,280 million in fiscal 20265. In the fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 product revenue was $738 million6.

The firewall is where the moat starts. It sits in the path of all of a company's network traffic, and replacing it means rewriting the security rules that have accumulated over years. Customers that buy a Palo Alto firewall usually buy the subscriptions that run on it and the support that keeps it current, and they are the natural buyers of the company's newer products.

What has changed is how much of the business the firewall is. Product revenue was 53.1% of revenue in fiscal 2015 and 19.9% in fiscal 20267. Management put hardware at about 10% of revenue8; the rest of the product line is software firewalls and, since February 2026, CyberArk's on-premise identity licences9.

The geographic spread of the base has barely changed in a decade. The United States produced $901.8 million of $1,378.5 million of revenue in fiscal 201610, about 65.4%11, and about 61.9% in fiscal 202612. The firewall won the American enterprise first and still earns most of its money there.

The firewall has become the entry point rather than the business. Product revenue was $738 million in the latest quarter13. Should it fall in fiscal 2027, that would mean fewer new customers are entering through the front door, which would slow everything sold after it.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Product revenue $2,280M in FY2026, 19.9% of revenue.

Product revenue, latest quarter
$738M (Q4 FY2026)

The entry point for new customers; a fall in FY2027 would slow everything sold afterwards.
