✦ Prisma AIRS: Securing the AI ItselfThin moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — the future bets

Palo Alto spent about $1 billion on AI security startups and has built a product with $100 million of ARR.

Prisma AIRS is Palo Alto's product for securing AI applications: the models, the agents and the data they touch. It grew quickly from nothing. Management said "Prisma AIRS surpassed $100 million in ARR within four quarters of general availability and has more than 800 customers"1.

AI security acquisitions, consideration booked ($M)635Protect AI231Koi117PortkeyPalo Alto Form 10-K FY2026; Prisma AIRS ARR above 100M per Q4 FY2026 call
Nearly a billion spent for $100 million of ARR.

It has been built largely by acquisition. Palo Alto bought Protect AI for $635 million in fiscal 2025, Koi for $231 million and Portkey, an AI gateway, for $117 million in fiscal 20262, a total of about $983 million3. After the fiscal year ended it bought Console Systems, an agentic workflow company, for $500 million4.

The bet is that every company deploying AI will need to control what its models and agents can do, and that this becomes a new security category as large as cloud security was. Palo Alto is trying to own the category early, by buying the startups that define it.

The early numbers are small against the company. ARR of $100 million is less than 1% of revenue of $11,480 million56, and the category's size is unproven.

The more than 800 customers7 are a small fraction of Palo Alto's more than 70,0008, which is the opportunity: the product is being sold into a base that already trusts the company. The acquisitions after year end, Console Systems for $500 million9, extend the same bet into agentic workflows.

Prisma AIRS is the purest AI bet on these pages. Its ARR is above $100 million10; if it has not at least doubled by the end of fiscal 2027, the AI security category is developing more slowly than the acquisitions assumed.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Prisma AIRS ARR above $100M within four quarters.

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Prisma AIRS ARR
Above $100M (Q4 FY2026)

The purest AI bet; less than a doubling by the end of FY2027 would mean the category is slower than the acquisitions assumed.
