⚠ A Multiple That Assumes Everything WorksHigh threat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — threat to the moat

Palo Alto trades at about 27 times sales and nearly 1,000 times GAAP earnings, a price that leaves no room for a stumble.

Palo Alto's shares price the platform strategy as a success already won. At $374.74 on 25 September 2026 the company was worth $306.54 billion1, about 26.7 times fiscal 2026 revenue2 and about 998 times GAAP net income of $307 million3. On the company's non-GAAP earnings of $3.84 a share4 the price is about 97.6 times5, and on the market's forward estimate about 89 times6.

Market value over fiscal-year revenue, at calendar year-end (times)7.7202213.5202314.9202413.9202526.7Sep 2026stockanalysis year-end market values over Palo Alto fiscal revenue; calculated
The multiple nearly doubled in a year.

The multiple has risen much faster than the business. The market value at the July fiscal year-end was $115,954 million in 2025 and $270,441 million in 20267, while revenue grew about 24.5%8. Over the past year the market value rose 128.3%9 and the share price about 86.7%10; the difference is the new shares issued for CyberArk.

Palo Alto has traded at high multiples before, and grown into them. At the end of calendar 2022 it was worth $42.19 billion11, about 7.7 times the revenue of the fiscal year then just ended12. The re-rating since then is the market paying for platformization.

At this price the risks on other pages matter more. A slowdown in NGS ARR, a failure to integrate CyberArk or a deeper fall in the GAAP margin would each hit a valuation that assumes none of them happens. The analysts' average target, $395.7013, is only about 6% above the price14.

The multiple has been extreme before and then fallen. Palo Alto's market value at the end of calendar 2015 was $15.13 billion15, about 16.3 times the fiscal 2015 revenue16; by the end of 2016 it was $11.47 billion17, about 8.3 times18. The business kept growing through that de-rating; the shareholders who bought at the top waited years to recover.

Short sellers are not betting heavily against it. Short interest was 2.62% of shares outstanding19, and 55 analysts have an average target of $395.70 with a Buy rating20. The market's scepticism, if any, is expressed in the forward multiple rather than in positions against the stock.

The price-to-sales ratio is the plain measure of expectations. At about 26.7 times21, it assumes years of fast growth; a return to the 13 to 15 times of fiscal 2023 to 202522, with no change in the business, would halve the share price.

The number that tests this threat
Reported
Price to trailing sales
About 26.7 times (25 September 2026)

The expectations built into the price; a return to the 13-15 times of FY2023-25 would halve it without any change in the business.
