$21.2 Billion Under ContractWide moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

Palo Alto holds $21.2 billion of signed contracts, nearly two years of revenue, locking customers in for years at a time.

Beyond what customers have paid, Palo Alto has contracts for much more. Remaining performance obligations, all contracted revenue not yet recognised, were $21.2 billion at 31 July 2026, of which about $9.3 billion is expected to be recognised in the next 12 months1. That is about 1.85 times fiscal 2026 revenue2.

Seven times larger in seven years.

The backlog has grown every year. RPO was $3.1 billion in fiscal 20193, $8.2 billion in fiscal 20224, $12.7 billion in fiscal 20245 and $15.8 billion in fiscal 20256. It rose 34% in fiscal 20267, helped by $1.8 billion from CyberArk and Chronosphere reported in the third quarter8.

Contracts of this length are a switching cost written down. A customer committed to three or five years of subscriptions will not move to a rival mid-contract, and the renewal conversation starts from a platform already in place.

The guidance extends the growth. Palo Alto expects RPO of $25.2 billion to $25.4 billion at the end of fiscal 2027, growth of 19% to 20%9.

The backlog rose through the year. RPO was $15.5 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, $16.0 billion in the second, $18.4 billion in the third and $21.2 billion in the fourth10111213. The two largest steps came in the quarters when CyberArk closed and when the large platform deals were signed.

The backlog is the most tangible evidence of the moat. It stands at $21.2 billion14. Were RPO to grow slower than revenue for two years, it would mean customers are signing shorter or smaller commitments.

Moat trajectory: Widening

RPO $21.2bn, +34%; FY2027 guide $25.2-25.4bn.
