Palo Alto has accrued $151 million for one patent verdict and fights others, the cost of equipment in so many networks.

A large installed base attracts patent claims, and Palo Alto carries several. In the Centripetal case a jury returned "a verdict of non-willful infringement with a lump sum amount of $ 152 million"1; the court later reduced the damages to $114 million, and Palo Alto has accrued $151 million2. The Finjan suit, filed in 2014, ended in summary judgment of non-infringement in March 2025 and is on appeal4. Another case, brought by Eire OG in Texas, was filed in April 20245. In fiscal 2024 litigation-related charges were $211.5 million, including a settlement6.

None of these is large against fiscal 2026 free cash flow of $4,113 million7. But they are the cost of selling equipment that sits in the path of millions of networks, and injunctions, not damages, are the real risk to a product line.

The accrual has barely changed in a year: $146 million at the end of fiscal 2025 and $151 million at the end of fiscal 20268, even though the court reduced the damages from $152 million to $114 million9. The difference reflects interest and costs while the appeals continue.

The $151 million accrual10 would become material only if a court ordered a product withdrawn or a new verdict ran into the hundreds of millions.
