Seventy Thousand Customers, None Above 10%Wide moat

Palo Alto Networks (PANW) — moat facet

No Palo Alto customer reaches a tenth of revenue, but about three-fifths of sales still come from the United States.

Palo Alto's end customers are many and none is large enough to matter on its own. The 10-K says no end-customer took more than 10% of revenue in any of the last three years1, and the company counts more than 70,000 customers2.

Three-fifths American.

The concentration is by geography, not by name. The United States produced $7,108 million of fiscal 2026 revenue, about 61.9%34, down from about 65.4% in fiscal 20165. Europe, the Middle East and Africa produced $2,428 million and Asia Pacific and Japan $1,373 million6. All three regions grew between 24% and 27% in fiscal 20267.

A broad base matters for the moat because no single customer can dictate terms. The largest buyers negotiate hard, especially in platform deals, but losing any one of them would not change the company's results much.

It also has a limit. Most of Palo Alto's customers are large enterprises and governments, whose security budgets move together in a recession. Diversification across names is not diversification across the economy.

International growth has been steady but slow to change the mix. Europe, the Middle East and Africa produced $247.1 million of revenue in fiscal 20168 and $2,428 million in fiscal 20269; Asia Pacific and Japan went from $158.2 million to $1,373 million1011. Both grew roughly in line with the company.

The geographic mix is slowly broadening. The United States took about 61.9% of revenue in fiscal 202612; a rise back above 65% would mean international growth has stalled and the company depends more on one market.
