IndustrialWide moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet
Industrial is 45% to 49% of ADI's revenue and reached a record in the latest twelve months, but the same line fell 35% in fiscal 2024 when customers stopped buying.
Industrial is the heart of Analog Devices and the source of most of its swings. It was $4,929.4 million in fiscal 2025, 45% of revenue1, and $1,971.9 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, 49%2. Over the latest twelve months it came to about $6,687.1 million3, a record.
What is inside is broad. The 10-K lists five sectors: industrial automation, instrumentation and measurement, defence, healthcare and energy management4. Defence covers applications such as electronic surveillance and countermeasures; healthcare includes insulin pumps5. These are the markets where ADI's precision converters, amplifiers and sensors are designed into equipment that sells for years, and where "Our analog ICs typically have long product life cycles."6
The history is a decade of growth with one sharp fall. On the latest basis for each year, Industrial was $2,324.7 million in fiscal 2017, $3,129.6 million in 2018, $3,014.9 million in 2019 and $3,005.6 million in 2020789. Maxim lifted it to $4,026.9 million in fiscal 2021 and $6,230.9 million in 20221011; it peaked at $6,565.4 million in fiscal 202312. Then it fell 34.7% to $4,290.3 million in fiscal 20241314, the decline "pronounced in our Industrial end market as customers decreased their inventory balances"15. Across eight years it grew about 9.9% a year16.
It is paid for part by part, mostly through distributors. The company attributes the rising distributor share in the latest quarter to Industrial's growing weight17, which means much of this line is booked when a distributor restocks rather than when a factory builds.
Is it profitable? ADI reports one segment and no profit by end market, so the margin on Industrial cannot be stated. The company-wide adjusted gross margin was 72.5% in the latest quarter18, and Industrial's weight rising alongside it suggests Industrial is not diluting the mix; that is an inference, not a disclosure.
Growth now is strong and broad. Fiscal 2025 Industrial rose 14.9%19 on inventory normalising and "growth in the test equipment and aerospace and defense sub-markets"20; the third quarter of fiscal 2026 rose 53%, with all sub-markets growing2122. The lasting part is argued on Test Equipment and Defence.
Over nine months of fiscal 2026 Industrial revenue was $5,269.8 million, up 50% on $3,512.9 million23. The quarterly climb has been steady: from $1,080.7 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2025 to $1,971.9 million in the third quarter of fiscal 20262425, about 82% higher26, and its share of revenue rose from 44.6% to 49.0% over the same six quarters27. A line that grows that fast, mostly through distributors, is the one to watch for signs of stock building.
The outlook depends on how much of the growth is shelves. If quarterly Industrial revenue falls more than 20% from its peak within two years, as it did after fiscal 2023, the record will have been another restocking.
Industrial +53% in Q3 FY2026; trailing twelve months about $6.7bn, a record.
The largest line; a fall of more than 20% from its peak would repeat fiscal 2024.
