Capital Spending From Ten Percent of Sales to FiveNarrow moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet
ADI's capital spending went from 10.3% of revenue in fiscal 2023 to 4.8% in 2025, which lifted free cash flow to 39% of revenue.
ADI spent heavily on its fabs once, after the shortage, and has since pulled back hard. Capital expenditure was $699.3 million in fiscal 2022 and $1,261.5 million in 2023, then $730.5 million in 2024 and $533.6 million in 20251. As a share of revenue it went from 5.8% to 10.3%, then 7.7% and 4.8%2. For most of the decade before, it ran between 3.0% and 4.7%3.
The spike was a response to 2021 and 2022, when customers could not get parts and ADI wanted more of its own capacity. It arrived just as demand turned. Fiscal 2023's spending was completed into the fiscal 2024 downturn, and the company then spent less than half as much in fiscal 2025 as it had two years earlier4.
Low capital spending is what makes ADI's free cash flow so high. Free cash flow was $4,278.6 million in fiscal 2025, 39% of revenue5, and $4,937.5 million over the twelve months to August 2026, 36%6. Every dollar not spent on plant is a dollar available for dividends and buybacks.
The risk is spending too little at the wrong time. Revenue rose 40% in the third quarter of fiscal 20267 and is guided to a record $4.3 billion in the fourth8. Capital spending over the last twelve months was 4.4% of revenue9. If demand keeps rising, ADI must rely on the capacity it built in 2023 and on its foundries.
The falsifier is supply, not spending. If ADI reports longer lead times or constrained supply while capital spending stays below 5% of revenue, the company will have starved its own capacity to protect free cash flow.
Capex 4.8% of revenue in FY2025 after 10.3% in FY2023.
What low capital spending leaves for owners; below 30% outside a downturn would mean the plant is costing more.
