Analog Devices (ADI) — threat to the moat
ADI cut R&D by 12.5% between fiscal 2022 and 2024, and the design wins those dollars should have bought would reach volume only years later.
Head count held in the downturn; research dollars did not. R&D was $1,700.5 million in fiscal 2022, $1,660.2 million in 2023 and $1,487.9 million in 20241, a fall of 12.5% in two years2. It recovered to $1,766.0 million in fiscal 20253.
Part of that was variable pay: research budgets include bonuses and project spending that fall when revenue does. Part was a choice. Either way the effect is the same. The designs that should have been started in 2024 were started with less money, and in analog, where products take years to reach volume, the cost of a thin year shows up later.
The company does not publish a pipeline measure, so the evidence has to come from revenue. The fiscal 2025 increase in the Industrial end market came from customers restocking and from "growth in the test equipment and aerospace and defense sub-markets"4, both markets where designs last many years. That suggests the older library is carrying the recovery.
There is nothing wrong with a company spending less when it earns less; many do. The risk is specific to a moat built on design wins: the wins that make revenue in 2028 are being paid for now. If R&D in fiscal 2026 grows by less than half the growth in revenue, when revenue is expected to rise by more than a third, the recovery will be funding buybacks ahead of the next generation of parts.
