Analog Devices (ADI) — threat to the moat

ADI's long life cycles protect its designs, not its quarters: revenue fell 23.4% in fiscal 2024 as customers ran down inventory and rose 40% in mid-2026 as they rebuilt it.

A long life cycle protects the design, not the quarter. ADI's revenue has moved hard in both directions: down 3.8% in fiscal 2019 and 6.5% in fiscal 2020, up 30.6% in 2021 and 64.2% in 2022, up 2.4% in 2023, down 23.4% in 2024 and up 16.9% in 20251. Some of those swings were acquisitions. The 2024 fall was not.

Three down years in seven, one of them by nearly a quarter.

The company explains that year plainly. The decline was "pronounced in our Industrial end market as customers decreased their inventory balances"2. Customers kept using ADI's parts; they stopped buying them while they worked through what they already held. The 10-K warns that the company manufactures to forecasts and is "subject to the risk of cancellation of orders leading to a sharp reduction of sales and backlog"3.

That is the gap between a design win and an order. The design win fixes which part goes into a product. The order depends on how many products the customer thinks it will sell and how much stock it wants to carry, and neither is ADI's decision. A catalogue with long life cycles smooths revenue over a decade; it does not smooth it over a year.

The current upturn is the reverse of 2024. Revenue grew 40% in the third quarter of fiscal 20264, and ADI attributed part of fiscal 2025's Industrial increase to "customer inventory balances normalizing"5. The next test comes when that restocking ends. A year-on-year revenue fall of more than 15% in any quarter before fiscal 2028 would say the recovery was a refill, not demand.
