✦ Empower: Integrated Voltage RegulatorsNarrow moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — the future bets

ADI paid $1.5 billion for Empower's integrated voltage regulators to follow data-centre power demand, just as Communications revenue grew 84%.

ADI's largest bet on data centres is a small company that makes power parts sit closer to the chip. It completed the purchase of Empower Semiconductor on 7 July 2026, "a provider of integrated voltage regulators and power management solutions, for approximately $ 1.5 billion"1. The preliminary allocation recorded $1.0 billion of goodwill and $0.6 billion of intangible assets, primarily technology-based2, and ADI paid $1,500.2 million in cash in the quarter3.

Two-thirds of the price recorded as goodwill.

The purchase follows the demand. The 10-K describes the data-centre market as driven by AI and hyperscale computing, which "require advanced power delivery, thermal management and high-speed connectivity solutions"4. In the third quarter of fiscal 2026, "The strongest growth within Communications came from the data center sub-market, driven by artificial intelligence-related infrastructure investments."5 Communications revenue rose 84% to $654.5 million6.

For ADI this is a familiar pattern in miniature: buy a specialist, fold it into a broad catalogue, and sell it through the same engineers and channels. Maxim added power management technology in 2021, in ADI's own description7; Empower adds integrated voltage regulators to that business.

The bet is small against the balance sheet, about 3% of total assets8, but it adds to a concentration. Data-centre growth depends on the building plans of data-centre operators rather than on hundreds of engineers each picking a part, and that makes it more like a programme business than the catalogue on The Catalogue and the Engineers.

The bet pays if the data-centre line keeps growing after the current build-out. If Communications revenue growth falls below 20% year on year within four quarters of the Empower close, the purchase will have been made near the top of a spending cycle.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Communications +84% in Q3 FY2026 on data-centre demand.

The data-centre demand Empower was bought for; below 20% within four quarters would say the purchase came at the top.
