Gross Margin Near Seventy PercentWide moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

ADI earns about 70 cents of adjusted gross profit on each dollar of sales, a level it held before Maxim, which is the plainest evidence that customers value its parts.

The clearest sign that customers value ADI's parts is what they pay for them. Adjusted gross margin was 69.3% in fiscal 2025 and 67.9% in 20241, and 72.5% in the third quarter of fiscal 20262. On a reported basis the figures are lower, 61.5% in fiscal 20253 and 67.3% in the latest quarter4, because reported cost of sales includes the amortisation of technology bought with Linear and Maxim.

Above 60% in every year shown except the fiscal 2024 downturn.

The long history, before Maxim, shows the same level. Reported gross margin was 65.8% in fiscal 2015 and 65.1% in 20165, 68.3% in fiscal 2018 and 67.0% in 20196. For a company that makes much of its product in its own fabs and buys the rest from foundries, that is a margin set by the product rather than by manufacturing scale. Analog parts are small, specialised and designed in; the customer who needs one does not shop it on price.

The margin moves with volume, because factories have fixed costs. Reported gross margin fell from 64.0% in fiscal 2023 to 57.1% in 202478 as revenue fell, and rose back as revenue recovered. The adjusted figure moved less: 67.9% in the bad year9.

This page is the reason the research budget on Sixteen Percent of Revenue on Research is affordable, and the reason the company can hold engineers through a slump. It is also what the market is paying for. The adjusted operating margin was 50.0% in the latest quarter10, which leaves little room for improvement and a long way to fall.

A falling adjusted gross margin in a year of rising revenue would be the warning sign, because volume should lift it. If it drops below 68% in any quarter of fiscal 2027 while revenue grows, customers will be paying less for the parts, not buying fewer of them.

Moat trajectory: Widening

Adjusted gross margin 72.5% in Q3 FY2026, from 69.2% a year earlier.

What customers pay for the parts; below 68% while revenue grows would mean pricing, not volume, is slipping.
