Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

Automotive grew 4.3 times from fiscal 2017, mostly through Maxim, and fell only 2.3% in the fiscal 2024 downturn when Industrial fell 35%.

Automotive is ADI's second line and its most dependable. It was $3,277.9 million in fiscal 2025, 30% of revenue1, and $998.2 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, 25%2. Over the latest twelve months it came to about $3,516.4 million3.

Analog Devices Automotive revenue ($bn)0.76FY20171.01FY20180.93FY20190.78FY20201.25FY20212.41FY20222.90FY20232.84FY20243.28FY2025Analog Devices Forms 10-K FY2019-FY2025, latest basis for each year
4.3 times in eight years, and almost flat in the downturn.

The 10-K describes the products as analog, digital, power and sensor chips for "electrification, digital cabin systems and autonomous platforms"4, deployed in applications such as audio and connectivity, battery monitoring and management systems, video processing and networking, and intelligent power5. In fiscal 2023 the growth came from the "Automotive end market, namely cabin electronics and battery management systems"6; in fiscal 2025 from "increases from connectivity solutions"7.

The history is mostly a purchase. Automotive was $758.1 million in fiscal 2017, $1,009.9 million in 2018, $929.7 million in 2019 and $778.7 million in 20208910. It was $1,248.2 million in fiscal 2021, the year Maxim closed, and $2,407.8 million in 20221112, nearly doubling in a year. It reached $2,904.0 million in 2023 and $3,277.9 million in 202513. Across eight years it grew 4.3 times, about 20.1% a year14.

It is paid for part by part, over the life of a car programme, which runs for years once a chip is designed in. That is why the line held up in the downturn: it fell only 2.3% in fiscal 2024 when Industrial fell 34.7%15.

Profitability by end market is not disclosed; ADI reports one segment. The line carries much of the Maxim intangibles whose amortisation, argued on The Amortisation Cliff After 2029, depresses reported margins, but the operating margin of automotive parts alone cannot be stated.

Growth has slowed as the rest of the company accelerated. Automotive rose 15.5% in fiscal 202516, then 8% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, 2% in the second and 16% in the third171819. Its share of revenue fell from 29.8% to 24.8% in a year20, because other lines grew faster.

Over nine months of fiscal 2026 Automotive revenue was $2,685.2 million, up 9% on $2,454.8 million21, the slowest growth of any line except Consumer in the third quarter. The line's share of revenue was 24% in fiscal 2023 and 30% in both 2024 and 202522; its rise in the downturn came from holding steady while the rest fell, and its fall now comes from growing while the rest surges.

The outlook rests on content per car. If quarterly Automotive revenue falls below $800 million, the level of the first quarter of fiscal 202623, the steadiest line in the company will have started to shrink.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Automotive +16% in Q3 FY2026 after +2% in Q2.

Automotive revenue, trailing twelve months
about $3,516.4M (four quarters to 1 August 2026), from $3,277.9M in FY2025

The steadiest line; a fall in trailing revenue outside a general downturn would say content per car is slipping.
