⚠ Floating-Rate Debt and a One-Year LineLow threat
Analog Devices (ADI) — threat to the moat
ADI's commercial paper more than doubled to $1.0 billion in nine months and its new credit line lasts 364 days, turning a company that gained from higher rates toward one that pays them.
ADI's borrowing has shortened. Commercial paper was $1,005.1 million at 1 August 2026, up from $446.6 million at the end of fiscal 20251, and current debt $1,344.9 million2. The July revolving credit facility runs for 364 days3. Short money has to be rolled over, and the rate resets each time.
The company sizes its rate exposure. On its floating-rate debt at the end of fiscal 2025, "our annual interest expense would change by approximately $14.5 million" for each 100-basis-point increase4, and interest income on its cash would change by about $36.5 million5. At that date higher rates helped ADI, because it held more floating-rate cash than floating-rate debt.
That balance has shifted. Cash and short-term investments fell from about $3,652.3 million at the end of fiscal 2025 to about $2,324.9 million at 1 August 20266, while commercial paper more than doubled7. A company that was net long floating rates is moving toward the other side.
None of this is large against $4.9 billion of trailing free cash flow8. The risk is the combination: a boom that requires working capital, two acquisitions, a policy of returning all free cash, and a funding mix leaning on paper that must be rolled every few weeks.
If commercial paper and the revolver together exceed $3 billion at a quarter end, ADI will be financing its capital returns with money it must refinance within a year.
