ConsumerThin moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

Consumer is ADI's smallest line, 13% of fiscal 2025 revenue and only 14% above its 2017 level, a business of large short-lived programmes unlike the rest of the catalogue.

Consumer is ADI's smallest line and the one that has grown least. It was $1,434.6 million in fiscal 2025, 13% of revenue1, and $397.2 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, 10%2. Over the latest twelve months it came to about $1,602.3 million3.

Barely above its 2017 level after eight years.

The 10-K lists three product groups: "Portable devices (smartphones, tablets, handheld gaming and wearable technology)", prosumer audio and video equipment, and hearables such as headphones, earbuds and hearing-health devices4. It describes the market as one requiring ICs that meet "the rigorous cost and time-to-market requirements of the consumer electronics market"5.

The history starts high. Consumer was $1,255.0 million in fiscal 20176, when "sales to Apple, Inc., one of our end customers, accounted for approximately 12% of net revenues"7. It then fell to $933.8 million in 2018, $752.3 million in 2019 and $624.9 million in 20208910. Maxim lifted it to $836.3 million in 2021 and $1,519.9 million in 20221112. It was $1,244.6 million in 2023, $1,207.9 million in 2024 and $1,434.6 million in 202513. Across eight years it grew about 14% in total, about 1.7% a year14.

Consumer is paid for in large programmes with short lives, the opposite of the catalogue on The Catalogue and the Engineers. Products change every year, so design wins must be won again each generation, and a single customer can move the line; that is the story told on Apple: Twelve Percent, Then Unnamed.

Profit by end market is not disclosed. The short product cycles and cost pressure the 10-K describes suggest lower margins than Industrial, but that is an inference.

Growth is modest. Fiscal 2025 rose 18.8%15, "primarily related to portable consumer products"16. In fiscal 2026 the quarters were $399.8 million, $397.8 million and $397.2 million171819, flat while every other line accelerated, and the share of revenue fell to 9.9%20.

The line's growth is slowing as the year goes on. Consumer revenue rose about 27% in the first quarter of fiscal 2026, to $399.8 million from $314.7 million, and about 23% in the second, to $397.8 million from $323.1 million212223; in the third it rose 6%24. Over nine months it was $1,191.0 million, up 18%25. The comparison with last year is getting harder, and the absolute figure has not moved in three quarters.

The outlook is one of shrinking weight. If Consumer falls below 8% of revenue for a full year, it will have become a tail; if it jumps above $500 million a quarter, ADI will have won a large programme, and the concentration risk of 2017 with it.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

Consumer flat near $397M a quarter in FY2026, 9.9% of revenue.

The line's weight; below 8% for a full year would make it a tail, above $500M a quarter a large new programme.
