Analog Devices (ADI) — threat to the moat
ADI trades at 47 times trailing earnings on the best results it has reported, after a year in which its market value rose 57%.
The market is paying for the upturn in full. At $395.43 on 28 September 2026 ADI was worth $191.61 billion1, 46.96 times trailing earnings and 13.80 times sales2. Its market value rose 57.33% in a year3. On market value over trailing net income of about $4,135.0 million4, the multiple is about 46.35.
The history shows why that is demanding. On year-end market values over reported earnings, the multiple was about 24.8 in fiscal 2015, 21.1 in 2018, 30.4 in 2022 and 29.7 in 20236. The very high readings, about 66.4 in fiscal 2021 and 64.5 in 20247, were years when earnings were depressed, by the Maxim deal and by the downturn. Today's multiple sits on the best earnings the company has reported.
The earnings themselves come from a sharp cycle. Revenue rose 40% in the third quarter of fiscal 20268, after falling 23.4% in fiscal 20249. Part of the rise is customers refilling stock they ran down, as the upturn in Industrial and the rising distributor share suggest; that is argued on What the Market Isn't Pricing In.
The forward multiple is kinder, 24.84 times10, because adjusted earnings exclude acquisition amortisation and assume the upturn continues. Analysts' average target is $470.7211.
The share price has already travelled far. At $395.43 the shares were 11.3% below their 52-week high of $445.91 and about twice their low of $223.471213. The dividend yield is 1.11%14. The price-to-sales ratio of 13.8015 compares with about 7.0 at the end of fiscal 202216, a year with $12.0 billion of revenue17.
The price leaves little room for a repeat of fiscal 2024. If quarterly revenue falls year on year before the end of fiscal 2027, the multiple will be resting on earnings that have already peaked.
What the market pays for the upturn; above 50 without earnings growth would mean price is running ahead of profit.
