The State-Funded NewcomersThin moat
Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet
ADI's one specific competitive warning is about rivals backed by foreign governments, while China buys a record 25.9% of its output.
When ADI stopped naming competitors, it kept one specific warning. The fiscal 2025 10-K expects competition to increase from "companies outside of the U.S., including entities associated with well-funded efforts by foreign governments to create indigenous semiconductor industries"1. It adds that governments "may provide incentives or make other investments that could benefit and give competitive advantages to our competitors"2.
This rival is different in kind from Texas Instruments or the companies ADI once listed. Its backers are governments, so it can price for share rather than for return, and its customers may be encouraged to buy local.
The exposure is largest where ADI sells most. China was $2,858.3 million of fiscal 2025 revenue, 25.9%34, up 34.3% in a year5. That figure is by the location of the buyer, which "may differ from the geographic location of the end customers"6, so the true exposure could be larger or smaller. The United States was $3,238.1 million7: Chinese buyers took about 88% as much as American ones8.
The United States has answered with incentives of its own. ADI recorded $96.3 million and $167.2 million of CHIPS Act credits against the value of qualifying manufacturing assets9, but the 10-K warns that such programmes "may not be available to us on acceptable terms or at all"10.
So far the newcomers have not dented ADI's Chinese sales, which reached a record share. The warning sign would be the reverse: China's revenue falling in a year when ADI's total revenue grows. If that happens, locally made parts will be replacing ADI's in the country that buys a quarter of its output.
China 25.9% of FY2025 revenue, up 34% in a year, as state-backed rivals grow.
Whether local rivals are displacing ADI in China; a fall while total revenue grows would say they are.
