The Revenue LinesWide moat

Analog Devices (ADI) — moat facet

ADI reports one segment and four end markets; Automotive grew fastest over eight years, and Industrial and Communications now lead the upturn.

ADI reports one segment and discloses revenue by end market, and the four end markets are the bands of this company's chart. In fiscal 2025 revenue of $11,019.7 million was Industrial $4,929.4 million, Automotive $3,277.9 million, Communications $1,377.9 million and Consumer $1,434.6 million1, or 45%, 30%, 13% and 13%2.

Industrial and Automotive are three-quarters of revenue.

There are no segment profits. The chief executive is the chief operating decision maker3, and the 10-K says the business "operates as a single operating segment and has a single reporting unit"4. Revenue by end market is the only split there is, so none of the four pages below can state a margin; where they discuss profitability, they say so.

The history needs one warning. ADI assigns each product to an end market and moves products when their use changes: "When this occurs, we reclassify revenue by end market for prior periods."5 It adds that such changes "typically do not materially change the sizing of, or the underlying trends"6. Fiscal 2023 Industrial, for example, is $6,565.4 million on the latest basis7. The chart takes each year from the latest filing that shows it, so the bands reconcile to revenue in every year.

The lines have diverged. From fiscal 2017 to 2025 Automotive grew about 20.1% a year, Industrial 9.9%, Communications 5.3% and Consumer 1.7%8. In the latest quarter the shares were 49%, 25%, 16% and 10%9, with Communications up 84% on data-centre demand.

The quarterly figures show the mix moving. In the third quarter of fiscal 2025 Industrial was 44.9% of revenue, Automotive 29.8%, Communications 12.3% and Consumer 13.0%10; a year later the shares were 49.0%, 24.8%, 16.3% and 9.9%11. Automotive and Consumer still grew, by 16% and 6%12, but far more slowly than the other two. Over the latest twelve months the four lines came to about $6,687.1 million, $3,516.4 million, $2,075.8 million and $1,602.3 million13, with Industrial and Communications both at records for the series.

Read together, the lines say ADI is an industrial and automotive company with a fast-growing data-centre business attached. If Industrial and Communications together pass 70% of revenue for a full year, from 57.2% in fiscal 202514, the company will be more exposed to inventory cycles than at any time in the decade shown.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Industrial 49% and Communications 16% of Q3 FY2026 revenue.

Industrial and Communications share of revenue, latest quarter
65.3% (Q3 FY2026: $2,626.4M of $4,021.9M), from 57.2% for FY2025

Exposure to the two lines that swing with inventory cycles; above 70% for a full year would be the highest in the decade shown.
