Specialty DiagnosticsNarrow moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

Specialty Diagnostics is Thermo Fisher's steadiest segment, earning about 27% on tests hospitals buy by the patient, and its slowest grower.

Specialty Diagnostics is Thermo Fisher's smallest segment and its steadiest. Revenue was $4,676 million in 20251, and segment income $1,256 million, a 26.9% margin2.

Up 44% in ten years, pandemic included.

It holds five businesses. Clinical diagnostics had revenue of $1,115 million in 2025, ImmunoDiagnostics $912 million, microbiology $645 million, transplant diagnostics $492 million and the healthcare market channel $1,788 million, less $275 million of sales between them3. The largest single piece is distribution.

Its history is quiet except for the pandemic. Revenue was $3,244 million in 20154 and $3,718 million in 20195. COVID testing lifted it to $5,343 million in 2020 and $5,659 million in 20216, and it fell back to $4,405 million by 20237. The Binding Site, bought for $2,699 million in January 20238, helped fill the gap.

It is paid by the test. Hospital and reference laboratories buy kits and reagents for tests they have validated, so revenue tracks patient volumes more than budgets.

Profitability has been stable. The margin was 26.9% in 2015 and 26.9% in 2025910, with a dip to 21.5% in 202211 as COVID testing faded. In the second quarter of 2026 it was 27.7%12.

Growth is slow. Revenue compounded at about 3.7% a year from 2015 to 202513, the lowest of the four segments. It grew 3.6% in 202514 and 6.3% in the second quarter of 202615, to $1,205 million16.

The outlook changes with the sale of microbiology to Astorg for approximately $1.075 billion17, which removes about 14% of the segment's revenue18. What remains is weighted toward the faster specialised tests and the channel.

The Binding Site cost $2,412 million in cash plus $307 million of debt settled19, the segment's largest purchase in the period. Inside the segment, $275 million of sales between its own businesses was eliminated in 202520, and the segment sold $72 million to the rest of the company21. Segment income in the second quarter of 2026 was $334 million against $306 million a year earlier22.

Distribution is the segment's largest single business. The healthcare market channel had revenue of $1,788 million in 202523, about 38% of the segment24. So a segment described as diagnostics is, by revenue, as much a distributor to hospitals as a maker of tests.

After the sale, watch the margin: below 25% would say the remaining business was less profitable than the one sold.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Margin 26.9% in 2015 and 2025; 27.7% in Q2 2026.
