No Customer Above 5%, Then SilenceWide moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
Thermo Fisher used to say no customer exceeded 5% of revenue; since 2020 it has said nothing, which is probably still true and no longer confirmed.
For years Thermo Fisher's 10-K said the same thing about customers: "There is no single customer the loss of which would have a material adverse effect on our business"1, and that no customer accounted for more than 5% of revenue in any of the past three years2. The FY2016 10-K said it too3.
The FY2020 10-K dropped it, and later filings have not brought it back. The company still says of government work that "no government contract is of such magnitude" that renegotiating or terminating it would have a material adverse effect4.
The base was once described by number. In 2015 the company said it "serves more than 400,000 customers"5. That figure too is no longer repeated.
The likely truth is diversification: revenue of $44,556 million in 20256 spread across laboratories, hospitals and drug companies. But a reader cannot confirm it, and a disclosure that disappears is information of a kind.
The customer count went the same way. The FY2017 10-K still said the company "serves more than 400,000 customers"7; the FY2025 10-K gives no number. A company whose base grew by acquisition since then has no reason to have fewer customers, but it has chosen not to say.
This relationship is wide on revenue as far as can be seen. The check is simple: if a future 10-K names a customer above 10%, the concentration the old sentence ruled out will have arrived. Trailing revenue of $46,336 million8 is the base any such customer would be measured against.
No concentration disclosed; revenue spread across more than 400,000 customers when last counted.
The base any large customer would be measured against; a disclosed customer above 10% would end the diversification.
