Local Suppliers in China: The Rival a Government PrefersThin moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

In China Thermo Fisher's rival is a procurement rule that favours local suppliers, and its share of revenue there has fallen from about 10% to about 7.5%.

In China Thermo Fisher competes against a rule rather than a product. Its 10-K describes "Chinese regulations requiring the use of local suppliers, which compel companies that do business in China to partner with local companies" and incentives for "government-backed local customers to buy from local suppliers"1.

Down about three points from the peak.

The figures follow. China was $2,060 million of revenue in 2017, 9.8% of the total23, and $3,793 million in 2022, 8.4%45. The FY2023 10-K stopped reporting China separately6. On the second-quarter 2026 call the chief executive put China at "about 7.5% of our revenue"7.

In 2025 sales grew in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific "but declined in China"8. In the second quarter of 2026 China grew low single digits9.

No product advantage answers a procurement rule. Thermo Fisher can partner locally, as the regulations require, but that shares the margin.

The rule has a data side as well. The 10-K notes that countries such as China have passed laws requiring personal data about their citizens to be kept on local servers10. A company selling trials and data services there has to build locally as well as sell locally, which raises the cost of competing against suppliers already inside.

Even at the height of the pandemic China's share was slipping: it was $2,797 million in 2020, 8.7% of revenue1112, down from 10.8% in 2019, as testing sales elsewhere swelled the total.

This relationship is thin and narrowing. It would stabilise if China's share held at about 7.5% through 2027; a fall toward 5% would mean the local suppliers were taking the market by regulation.

Moat trajectory: Narrowing

China 10.8% of revenue (2019), 8.4% (2022), about 7.5% (2026).

About 7.5% (Q2 2026 call)

The market regulation is closing; a fall toward 5% would mean local suppliers are winning by rule.
