Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

Thermo Fisher's laboratory products line has shrunk two years running while the catalogue around it grew.

The channel's own product line is going the wrong way. Laboratory products revenue was $2,613 million in 2023, $2,525 million in 2024 and $2,407 million in 20251, down 7.9%2.

Laboratory products revenue ($M)2,61320232,52520242,4072025Thermo Fisher Form 10-K FY2025, revenue by business
Down $206 million in two years.

Laboratory equipment is a capital purchase, and customers are holding back on those, as the instrument figures elsewhere show. The line recovered only slightly in the second quarter of 2026, to $608 million from $601 million3.

A channel that sells more of other things while its own equipment shrinks is still a healthy channel. But the shrinking line sits in the same low-margin segment.

The rest of the segment covered the decline. In 2025 pharma services grew $457 million and the research and safety channel $422 million4, against a fall of $118 million in laboratory products5. The shrinking line is small enough to hide, which is also why it is easy to overlook.

The second quarter of 2026 showed how far behind the line has fallen. Laboratory products revenue grew 1.2% to $608 million67, while the research and safety channel in the same segment grew 8.1% to $2,036 million. The channel is selling more to laboratories; less of it is Thermo Fisher's own equipment.

Its weight in the segment is falling. Laboratory products were 11.3% of the segment's revenue in 2023 and 10.0% in 202589. At that pace the line matters less each year, which is the kind of business the company has tended to sell.

A third annual decline in 2026 would mean the equipment has lost share, not just waited for budgets. Full-year revenue below $2,407 million is the mark.
