Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

Thermo Fisher's own 10-K lists third-party distributors among its competitors, and a catalogue is the easiest part of the business to copy.

Distribution is the most contestable part of the business. The 10-K lists "third-party distributors" among Thermo Fisher's competitors1, alongside manufacturers and service providers, and names the "relative prices of our products and services" as one of the factors on which it competes2.

Price sensitivity, research and safety channel, 2025 ($M)7,440Channel revenue3,350Segment income74One-point price cutThermo Fisher Form 10-K FY2025; price cut calculated
Small once, large if repeated.

A distributor's advantage rests on assortment and delivery, both of which a well-funded rival can match. Nothing stops a customer from ordering consumables from two catalogues.

The margins show the limit. The segment holding the channel earned 14.0% in 20253, a level at which price competition bites quickly.

Price competition would bite quickly at this margin. A one-point cut in prices across the $7,440 million research and safety channel would cost about $74 million a year45, about 2.2% of the whole segment's income of $3,350 million. That is small for one year and large if repeated.

So far the channel has been gaining pace, not losing it. The research and safety channel grew 2.6% in 2024 and 6.0% in 202567, and 8.1% in the second quarter of 2026. A distributor under real attack from rivals would show the opposite pattern, slowing growth hidden inside a segment rescued by acquisitions.

The channel also outpaced its own segment. Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services grew 5% organically in the second quarter of 20268, against 8.1% reported growth in the research and safety channel, which has no acquisition inside it.

The signal would be channel growth falling toward zero while the segment's revenue grew by acquisition. At 8.1% in the latest quarter9 it is not happening yet.
