Running Other Companies' Drug DevelopmentNarrow moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet
A third of Thermo Fisher's revenue comes from running trials and making drugs for other companies, businesses it bought for more than $32 billion.
Thermo Fisher earns a third of its revenue doing work drug companies choose not to do themselves. Clinical research revenue was $7,915 million and pharma services $7,142 million in 20251, 33.8% of revenue together2. In the second quarter of 2026 they were $4,289 million of $11,994 million34, 35.8%, with Clario added.
Pharmaceutical and biotech customers are the core. Management described that market as "our biggest end market, about 60% of our revenue"5.
The moat is the cost of changing contractors. A trial run by PPD, or a drug approved to be made in a Patheon plant, is expensive to move, and contracts typically run three to five years6. The company sells both as one package.
Almost all of it was bought: Patheon for $7,358 million7, PPD for $16,036 million8 and Clario for $9,098 million9.
The returns are modest. These businesses sit in a segment that earned 14.0% in 202510, and services carry a lower gross margin than products11.
Some of this work is done with partners. Thermo Fisher owns 60% of PPD-SNBL K.K. in Japan12, a joint venture whose partner holds put options on the remaining 40%. The company has also been buying plants: in 2025 it acquired a sterile fill-finish site in Ridgefield, New Jersey from Sanofi13. The pattern is to buy capacity and customers together rather than build them.
Clinical research is now the largest line in the company's revenue-by-business table. In the second quarter of 2026 it had revenue of $2,396 million, against $2,036 million for the research and safety channel and $1,893 million for pharma services14. The segment holding these businesses grew 5% organically15.
This facet is narrow and widening, because Clario adds a data business with better economics to a slow-growing trial business. It would be falsified by clinical research growth, excluding Clario, staying near the 1.0% of 202516. The latest quarter's combined $4,289 million is the starting point.
Clinical research and pharma services 33.8% of revenue in 2025, 35.8% in Q2 2026.
The outsourcing franchise; a falling share once Clario is in both years would mean it is losing ground.
