✦ AI: The OpenAI CollaborationThin moat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — the future bets
Thermo Fisher has a collaboration with OpenAI and a research budget of about 3% of revenue, which is a start rather than a strategy.
Thermo Fisher has started to put artificial intelligence into its products. In the fourth quarter of 2025 it said it had "established a strategic collaboration with OpenAI"1. The 10-K now lists "technical performance and advances in technology (including artificial intelligence)" among the factors on which it competes2.
The company spends modestly on research. Research and development was $1,397 million in 20253, 3.1% of revenue4, and $360 million in the second quarter of 20265. That is a small budget for a company this size, because much of the revenue is distribution and services that need little research.
AI could help in two places: in instruments, where software turns data into answers, and in clinical research, where Clario's trial data and PPD's operations are data businesses. The proteomics software purchases point the same way.
The bet is thin. No revenue from AI is disclosed, and a collaboration is not a product.
Research spending has grown no faster than the business. It rose from $1,337 million in 2023 to $1,397 million in 20256, 4.5%7, about the same as revenue. A company making a large bet on software would be expected to let research outgrow sales for a while; Thermo Fisher has not yet done so.
It would become real if the company began reporting AI-related revenue or pricing, or if research spending rose above 4% of revenue to build it. Quarterly research spending, $360 million in the second quarter, is the measure of commitment.
R&D 3.1% of revenue in 2025; no AI revenue disclosed.
The commitment to building software and AI; spending above 4% of revenue would signal a real bet.
