Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat

A seventh of Life Sciences Solutions' revenue is sold to Thermo Fisher's own channel, so the segment's growth is best read from its external sales.

Life Sciences Solutions reported revenue of $10,374 million in 2025, but only $8,781 million of it came from external customers1. The other $1,593 million, 15.4%2, was sold to Thermo Fisher's own segments.

External sales are the cleaner measure.

That makes the segment figure a little less clean than it looks. A reagent sold to the channel counts once in the segment and again when the channel sells it, before the eliminations line removes the duplicate.

The consolidated figures are right, and the segment margin is measured on total segment revenue. But stocking decisions inside the company can move segment growth in a single quarter.

No other segment leans on the channel this much. Analytical Instruments sold $201 million to other segments in 2025, Specialty Diagnostics $72 million and Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services $167 million3, 2.7%, 1.5% and 0.7% of their revenue4. Life Sciences Solutions, at 15.4%, is the business the channel was built to carry.

The internal share is rising. In 2023 Life Sciences Solutions sold $8,545 million to external customers out of $9,977 million5, so 14.4% went to other segments6, against 15.4% in 2025.

Company-wide, internal sales are rising too. Eliminations were $565 million in the second quarter of 2026 against $501 million a year earlier7, 12.8% more8, faster than revenue.

The number to set beside reported segment growth is external revenue: $8,160 million in 2024 and $8,781 million in 20259, a 7.6% rise10. If external growth lags segment growth for long, the channel is absorbing stock rather than selling it.
