⚠ Revenue per Employee Fell From $403,000 to $356,000Low threat
Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat
Thermo Fisher's revenue per employee fell from about $403,000 to about $356,000 as it bought labour-heavy service businesses.
The move into services has made Thermo Fisher a more labour-intensive company. Revenue per employee was about $403,000 in 2020, on $32,218 million of revenue and more than 80,000 people12. In 2025 it was about $356,000, on $44,556 million and approximately 125,000 people34.
Clinical trials are run by staff, and PPD brought tens of thousands of them. A company with more people per dollar of revenue has less operating leverage when revenue grows.
The company is managing it: severance actions in the first half of 2026 affected approximately 1% of the workforce5.
Since 2023 the trend has turned slightly. Headcount was approximately 122,000 at the end of 20236 and approximately 125,000 at the end of 20257, up about 2.5%, while revenue rose 4.0%8. Productivity edged up for the first time since PPD arrived.
The 2020 figure was itself a pandemic peak. In 2017 revenue of $20,918 million9 and approximately 70,000 employees10 gave about $299,000 per head; in 2019, $25,542 million11 and more than 75,00012 gave about $341,00013. Measured against the years before COVID, 2025's $356,000 is higher, which means PPD's labour-heavy trials have been absorbed without undoing a decade of productivity gains.
Earlier purchases did the same. In 2016, before Patheon, revenue of $18,274 million14 and approximately 55,000 employees15 gave about $332,000 per head16; after Patheon it fell to about $299,000 in 2017.
A further fall in revenue per employee as Clario's approximately 4,000 colleagues arrive17 would mean the services mix is still diluting productivity. A rise would mean the purchases are being absorbed.
