Services: $18.6 Billion, Mostly Clinical TrialsNarrow moat

Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — moat facet

Half of Thermo Fisher's recurring base is services, and most of that is clinical trials and contract manufacturing that must be won again.

Services are the other half of Thermo Fisher's repeat revenue, and most of them are not maintenance contracts. Service revenue was $2,297 million in 2015, $2,562 million in 2016 and $3,544 million in 20171. It was $8,850 million in 2021 and $16,367 million in 20222, and $18,592 million in 20253. The jump in 2022 is the first full year of the clinical research business bought in December 2021.

The 2022 step is an acquisition, not a renewal rate.

That changes what recurring means. A service contract on an instrument renews every year while the instrument works. A clinical trial runs for its length and ends. The 10-K says remaining obligations beyond twelve months "generally relate to contract manufacturing, clinical research and extended warranty service agreements", which typically have durations of three to five years4.

So the service revenue is recurring in the way a construction company's revenue is recurring: a backlog that has to be refilled. It is still valuable, because pharmaceutical customers outsource the same kinds of work again and again, but it has to be won.

Services grew 4.2% in 20255, and in the first half of 2026 they were $9,899 million6.

The scale of the change is large. Services were $2,297 million of $16,965 million of revenue in 20157, 13.5%, and $18,592 million of $44,556 million in 20258, 41.7%9. In ten years Thermo Fisher went from a products company with some services to a company in which services are nearly as large as consumables.

The facet holds as long as service revenue grows faster than the backlog that feeds it shrinks. Service revenue below $18.6 billion for a full year would mean trials and contracts were ending faster than new ones were signed.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Services $16,367M (2022) to $18,592M (2025).

The number that tests this moat
Reported
Service revenue, first half 2026
$9,899M (H1 2026)

The backlog-fed half of the base; a full year below $18.6bn would mean contracts are ending faster than they are won.
