Thermo Fisher Scientific (TMO) — threat to the moat
Life Sciences Solutions grew 12.6% in the second quarter of 2026, but only 3% organically, with the rest bought.
Life Sciences Solutions revenue rose from $2,499 million to $2,815 million in the second quarter of 20261, 12.6%2. On the call the company put organic growth in the segment at 3%3.
Most of the difference is the filtration and separation business, which Thermo Fisher expected to bring about $750 million of revenue a year4. A new line of other revenue in the segment, $112 million in the quarter5, appeared only after the purchase.
That matters for how the facet is read. A consumable that grows 3% on its own is a sturdy business; it is not the 20% grower the reported figures suggest.
The company as a whole was weaker earlier in the year. First-quarter 2026 organic growth was 1%6, so the second quarter's 5% was a sharp improvement. Life Sciences Solutions segment income rose to $1,041 million from $919 million7, 13.3%8, slightly faster than revenue, which says the acquired filtration business is earning at about the segment's margin.
On organic terms the segment was the slowest of the four in the quarter. Management put organic growth at 7% in Analytical Instruments, 5% in Specialty Diagnostics, 5% in Laboratory Products and Biopharma Services and 3% in Life Sciences Solutions9. The segment with the fastest reported growth had the slowest underlying growth.
The comparison becomes clean in the fourth quarter of 2026, when the purchase is in both years. Organic growth still near 3% then would confirm the acquisition, not demand, carried 2025 and 2026.
