Consumer ClientThin moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's consumer PCs sell less than they did in fiscal 2015, on falling prices and falling units, a line without an edge.
Consumer PCs are Dell's smallest and weakest revenue line. They sold $6,922 million in fiscal 2026, about 6% of company revenue12.
What is inside is notebooks and desktops sold to individuals, online and through retailers. Dell's direct sales force, support contracts and financing, which matter so much to its business customers, matter little here, where price and brand decide.
The history is one pandemic spike and a long fall. Consumer revenue was $10,880 million in fiscal 2015, $10,130 million in fiscal 2016 and $10,748 million in fiscal 20173. It jumped to $15,888 million in fiscal 2022 as households bought laptops for home working and schooling, then fell to $12,657 million, $9,102 million4, $7,549 million and $6,922 million5. Fiscal 2026 was about 56% below the peak and about 36% below fiscal 20156.
How it is paid: one-off sales, often through retailers, with little recurring revenue attached. Dell says fiscal 2026 revenue fell on "a decline in average selling prices and units sold"7, the combination that signals a weak market position.
Profitability is not disclosed separately; the client segment as a whole earned 5.6% in fiscal 20268. Given falling prices, consumer is almost certainly the weaker part of that margin.
The competitive position is third place. IDC put Dell at 13.6% of worldwide PC shipments in the second calendar quarter of 2026, behind Lenovo at 24.4% and HP at 19.1%9, and those shares include business machines; Dell's consumer position is weaker than the total suggests.
The latest quarters show a pause in the decline: $1,589 million in the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and $1,842 million in the second, up 7%1011. Some of that is higher prices as memory costs rose12.
The line is now a small part of Dell. Consumer revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2027, $1,842 million, was about 3.9% of total revenue of $46,971 million1314, against about 16% in fiscal 202215.
This line is being run for what it contributes, not for share, and it has little moat. The number that would change that verdict is annual revenue: a second consecutive year of growth in fiscal 2027 would mean the decline has found a floor; a return to falling revenue would confirm a slow exit.
Down 56% from the FY2022 peak; +7% in Q2 FY2027.
Whether the decline has ended; growth in FY2027 would mean a floor.
