A Dividend Raised by About a Fifth Three Years RunningNarrow moat

Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet

Dell has raised its dividend by about a fifth three times in four years, while paying out only a quarter of its earnings.

Dell's dividend is young and rising quickly. The quarterly dividend was $0.37 in fiscal 2024, $0.445 in fiscal 2025 and $0.525 in fiscal 2026, and the board approved a 20% increase to $0.63 for fiscal 2027123. The fiscal 2026 increase was 18%4.

Up 70% in three years.

The dividend is modest against earnings. Dell paid $1,459 million of dividends in fiscal 20265, about 25% of net income of $5,936 million6. At the current share price the yield is about 0.45%7.

The small payout is a choice. Dell prefers buybacks, which it can vary, to a dividend that investors expect to rise every year. The dividend signals confidence; the buybacks do the heavy lifting.

The board is careful not to promise too much. The 10-K says Dell "may not continue to pay cash dividends or to pay cash dividends at the same rate as announced in February 2026"8.

The latest payment is already scheduled. Dell declared the $0.63 dividend on 1 September 2026, payable on 30 October9. At that rate and the 635,812,750 shares outstanding on 1 September10, the annual cost is about $1.6 billion11, well under half the $3,796 million Dell spent on buybacks in a single quarter12.

The dividend's growth is a signal of management's confidence in steady cash flow. The quarterly rate, $0.63 today13, is the figure to follow; an increase of less than 10% next February, after three raises near 20%, would suggest the board sees the AI earnings as less durable than the share price does.

Moat trajectory: Holding steady

Quarterly dividend $0.63 after a 20% raise; payout about 25%.

Management's confidence in steady cash; a raise under 10% next year would signal caution about the AI earnings.
