Neoclouds, Sovereigns and EnterprisesNarrow moat
Dell Technologies (DELL) — moat facet
Dell's AI orders come from neoclouds, governments and enterprises, and only the last kind is a traditional Dell customer.
Dell describes its AI buyers by type rather than by name. In November 2025 it said its AI pipeline included "a mix of neocloud, sovereign and enterprise customers"1. Those are three very different kinds of customer.
Neoclouds are specialist AI cloud providers: large buyers, often young, often financed with debt, and dependent on renting capacity to AI developers. Sovereign customers are governments building national computing capacity, slower to buy but less sensitive to credit. Enterprises buy smaller clusters for their own use and are closest to Dell's traditional customer base, with support contracts and existing relationships.
The mix matters for the moat. Enterprise AI buyers are where Dell's direct sales force, support and financing add the most, and where switching costs build. Neocloud orders are larger and lumpier, and Dell's filing warns that large AI purchases carry larger amounts of credit2.
Orders have been growing across the board, from $3.6 billion in the third quarter of fiscal 20253 to $60.9 billion in the second quarter of fiscal 20274. Dell does not disclose the split by type.
The scale of the orders surprised the company itself. In November 2025 Dell described "an unprecedented $30 billion in orders year to date"5; in the single quarter to July 2026 it booked $60.9 billion6, twice that nine-month total.
The customer mix is what separates a durable AI franchise from a boom supplier. The quarterly AI order figure, $60.9 billion in the latest quarter7, is the best available proxy; a fall in orders once the largest cloud projects are filled would show how much of the business depended on the neocloud end of the mix.
Orders $3.6bn a quarter to $60.9bn in under two years.
Demand across AI buyer types; a fall once the largest projects are filled would show dependence on a few neocloud buyers.
